4) How do you Spread Bet on the AIB Market to Go Up?
Allied Irish Bank Financial Spread Trading Example
If you are going to spread trade on Irish shares like Allied Irish Bank then, on visiting a spread betting site like Capital Spreads, at the moment you would find a spread trading price of €1.37 - €1.40.
This means you can spread trade on Allied Irish Bank shares to go higher than €1.40 or to go lower than €1.37.
When making a spread bet, investors trade on every unit the market goes up or down. With the Allied Irish Bank market a unit is €0.01 of the share's price movement.
As an example, you might choose to bet £10 for every cent that the Allied Irish Bank share price moves up or down.
Spread Betting on the Market to Rise
If you were to buy Allied Irish Bank at €1.40 and the shares increased then the spread could move to €1.48 - €1.51. If that happened, you might choose to close your trade for a profit by selling at €1.48.
P&L = (final price of the market - opening price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€1.48 - €1.40) x £10 per cent stake
P&L = €0.08 x £10 per cent
P&L = £80 profit
Of course, if the market had decreased to, as an example, €1.31 - €1.34, you might decide to close your spread bet to limit your losses. In that case, you would sell your spread bet at €1.31.
Therefore, with the same £10 per cent stake:
P&L = (final price of the market - opening price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€1.31 - €1.40) x £10 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.09 x £10 per cent
P&L = -£90 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the AIB Market to Go Down?
A useful benefit of spread betting is that you can short the markets.
At the start of the example, the spread was €1.37 - €1.40.
If you were to go short of Allied Irish Bank at €1.37 and the shares decreased then you might see the spread move to €1.27 - €1.30. If that were to happen, you could close your spread bet for a profit by buying at €1.30.
P&L = (opening price of the market - final price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€1.37 - €1.30) x £10 per cent stake
P&L = €0.07 x £10 per cent
P&L = £70 profit
Nevertheless, if the market increased to, as an example, €1.42 - €1.45, you may want to close your trade to limit your losses. Assuming this was the case, you would buy at €1.45.
You would close your bet with the same £10 per cent stake:
P&L = (opening price of the market - final price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€1.37 - €1.45) x £10 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.08 x £10 per cent
P&L = -£80 loss
