Should you decide to spread bet on French shares such as Alstom then, on visiting a spread trading website like Capital Spreads, you might find a spread of €49.11 - €49.26.
That means you could spread trade on Alstom shares to move above €49.26 or below €49.11.
With spread betting, investors trade on every unit the market increases or decreases; specifically, for the Alstom market a unit is €0.01 of the share's price movement.
For example, you could decide to spread bet £2 for every cent that the Alstom share price increases or decreases.
Buying - Spread Betting on the Market to Rise
If you were to go long of Alstom at €49.26 and the shares increased then the spread could become €49.88 - €50.03. If that happened, you might decide to close your bet for a profit at €49.88.

Of course, if the market decreased to, as an example, €48.69 - €48.84, you may want to close your trade to prevent further losses. If that were to happen, you would sell back at €48.69.
You would close your bet with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (final level of the market - initial level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€48.69 - €49.26) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -€0.57 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£114 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Alstom Market to Go Down?
One of the benefits of placing a spread bet is that investors can go short of the markets.
When we began this example, the price was €49.11 - €49.26.
If you were to sell Alstom at €49.11 and the shares went down then you might see the spread move to €48.41 - €48.56. Assuming this was the case, you might choose to close your spread bet for a profit by buying at €48.56.

Therefore, with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (initial level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€49.11 - €49.62) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -€0.51 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£102 loss
