4) How do you Spread Bet on the Amazon Market to Go Up?
Amazon Spread Trading Example
Should you decide to spread bet on US shares like Amazon then, looking at a spread betting website, you may find a spread of $132.17 - $132.36.
That means you could spread trade on Amazon to increase above $132.36 or decrease below $132.17.
When spread betting, you bet on every unit the market goes up or down; specifically, for the Amazon market a unit is $0.01 of the share's price movement.
So, you might choose to spread bet £2 for every cent Amazon moves up or down.
Spread Betting on the Market to Increase
If you were to buy Amazon at $132.36 and the shares increased then the spread could become $133.02 - $133.21. Assuming this was the case, you could close your trade at $133.02.
P&L = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = ($133.02 - $132.36) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = $0.66 x £2 per cent
P&L = £132 profit
Markets can also fall, if the market dropped to, for example, $131.76 - $131.95, you might decide to close your trade to restrict your losses. If that happened, you would sell back at $131.76.
You would close your bet with the same £2 per cent stake:
P&L = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = ($131.76 - $132.36) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -$0.60 x £2 per cent
P&L = -£120 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Amazon Market to Go Down?
An advantage of placing a spread trade is that investors can short the markets.
The initial spread betting price was $132.17 - $132.36.
If you were to sell Amazon at $132.17 and the shares went down then the spread might become $131.35 - $131.54. If so, you might decide to close your spread bet at $131.54.
P&L = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = ($132.17 - $131.54) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = $0.63 x £2 per cent
P&L = £126 profit
The markets can of course rise, if the market were to rise to $132.55 - $132.74, you might decide to close your bet to restrict your losses. If that were to happen, you would buy back at $132.74.
Therefore, with the same £2 per cent stake:
P&L = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = ($132.17 - $132.74) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -$0.57 x £2 per cent
P&L = -£114 loss
