4) How do you Spread Bet on the Australia 200 Market to Go Up?
Australia 200 Spread Betting Example
If you decide to spread trade on an index like the Australia 200 then, on visiting a spread trading website like Capital Spreads, at the time of writing you would see a spread trading price of 4882 - 4886.
As a result, you could bet on the Australia 200 to go higher than 4886 or to go lower than 4882.
When spread betting, investors bet on every unit the market moves up or down; with the Australia 200 market a unit is 1 point of the index's price movement.
For this instance, you could decide to trade £3 for every point the Australia 200 moves up or down.
Buying - Spread Betting on the Australia 200 to Go Up
If you were to go long of the Australia 200 at 4886 and the index increased then the spread might change to 4930 - 4934. If this were the case, you could close your trade for a profit, if so you would sell at 4930.
P&L = (settlement value of the market - opening value of the market) x stake per point
P&L = (4930 - 4886) x £3 per point stake
P&L = 44 points x £3 per point
P&L = £132 profit
Markets can also fall, if the market were to drop down to 4844 - 4848, you might decide to close your spread bet to prevent further losses. If so, you would sell at 4844.
So, with the same £3 per point stake:
P&L = (settlement value of the market - opening value of the market) x stake per point
P&L = (4844 - 4886) x £3 per point stake
P&L = -42 points x £3 per point
P&L = -£126 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Australia 200 Market to Go Down?
One of the many advantages of spread betting is that you can go short of the markets.
When we began this example, the spread was 4882 - 4886.
If you were to sell the Australia 200 at 4882 and the index went down then the spread might become 4838 - 4842. Assuming this was the case, you might decide to close your spread trade at 4842.
P&L = (opening value of the market - settlement value of the market) x stake per point
P&L = (4882 - 4842) x £3 per point stake
P&L = 40 points x £3 per point
P&L = £120 profit
The markets can of course rise, if the market had increased to, for example, 4915 - 4919, you might decide to close your bet to prevent further losses. If that happened, you would buy your spread bet at 4919.
Therefore, with the same £3 per point stake:
P&L = (opening value of the market - settlement value of the market) x stake per point
P&L = (4882 - 4919) x £3 per point stake
P&L = -37 points x £3 per point
P&L = -£111 loss
