4) How do you Spread Bet on the BNP Paribas Market to Go Up?
BNP Paribas Trading Example
If you are going to spread trade on French shares such as BNP Paribas then, on visiting a spread trading website like Capital Spreads, at the moment you would see a spread of €51.12 - €51.27.
Therefore, you can spread bet on BNP Paribas shares to go above €51.27 or below €51.12.
If you are spread betting, you bet on every unit the market goes up or down; with the BNP Paribas market a unit is €0.01 of the share's price movement.
For example, you might decide to bet £2 for every cent that the BNP Paribas share price rises or falls.
Betting on the Market to Go Up
If you bought BNP Paribas at €51.27 and the shares increased then the market might be re-priced at €51.96 - €52.11. Assuming this was the case, you could close your trade for a profit, if so you would sell at €51.96.
P&L = (final value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€51.96 - €51.27) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = €0.69 x £2 per cent
P&L = £138 profit
However, if the market dropped to €50.63 - €50.78, you might want to close your trade to restrict your losses. In that case, you would sell at €50.63.
With the same £2 per cent stake:
P&L = (final value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€50.63 - €51.27) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.64 x £2 per cent
P&L = -£128 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the BNP Paribas Market to Go Down?
One major advantage of placing a spread bet is that investors can sell the markets.
At the start of the example, the price was €51.12 - €51.27.
If you were to go short of BNP Paribas at €51.12 and the shares decreased then you might see the spread move to €50.25 - €50.40. If that happened, you might want to close your spread bet for a profit by buying at €50.40.
P&L = (initial value of the market - final value of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€51.12 - €50.40) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = €0.72 x £2 per cent
P&L = £144 profit
Financial markets also move up, if the market had risen to, for example, €51.64 - €51.79, you could choose to close your spread bet to restrict your losses. If this were the case, you would buy your spread bet at €51.79.
You would close your bet with the same £2 per cent stake:
P&L = (initial value of the market - final value of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€51.12 - €51.79) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.67 x £2 per cent
P&L = -£134 loss
