If you decide to spread trade on French shares like Carrefour then, on visiting a spread trading website, at the time of writing you would see a spread of €35.41 - €35.52.
This means you could spread trade on Carrefour shares to go higher than €35.52 or to go lower than €35.41.
With spread trading, investors bet on every unit the market moves up or down. Specifically, for the Carrefour market a unit is €0.01 of the share's price movement.
For example, you might choose to bet £2 for every cent that the Carrefour share price moves up or down.
Spread Betting on the Market to Increase
If you were to buy Carrefour at €35.52 and the shares went up then the market might be re-priced at €36.00 - €36.11. If that happened, you might decide to close your spread bet for a profit by selling at €36.00.
Profit/Loss = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€36.00 - €35.52) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = €0.48 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = £96 profit
Nevertheless, if the market had moved down to, as an example, €35.08 - €35.19, you could choose to close your spread bet to prevent further losses. If so, you would sell your spread bet at €35.08.
You would close your bet with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€35.08 - €35.52) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -€0.44 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£88 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Carrefour Market to Go Down?
One major advantage of spread betting is that investors can go short of the markets.
When we began this example, the spread betting price was €35.41 - €35.52.
If you were to sell Carrefour at €35.41 and the shares fell then you might see the spread move to €34.85 - €34.96. Assuming this was the case, you might choose to close your trade for a profit at €34.96.
Profit/Loss = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€35.41 - €34.96) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = €0.45 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = £90 profit
On the other hand, if the market had increased to, for example, €35.72 - €35.83, you may decide to close your trade to limit your losses. If this were the case, you would buy your spread bet at €35.83.
With the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€35.41 - €35.83) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -€0.42 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£84 loss
