4) How do you Spread Bet on the Cisco Systems Market to Go Up?
Cisco Systems Spread Trading Example
If you decide to spread bet on US shares such as Cisco Systems then, on visiting a spread trading site, at the moment you would see a spread trading price of $24.60 - $24.65.
This means you can spread trade on Cisco Systems shares to go above $24.65 or below $24.60.
When making a spread bet, you trade on every unit the market increases or decreases. In the case of the Cisco market a unit is $0.01 of the share's price movement.
With this example, you might decide to trade £2 for every cent that the Cisco Systems share price moves up or down.
Betting on the Market to Go Up
If you were to go long of Cisco Systems at $24.65 and the shares increased then the spread might change to $25.14 - $25.19. Therefore, you might choose to close your bet for a profit at $25.14.
P&L = (settlement price of the market - initial price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = ($25.14 - $24.65) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = $0.49 x £2 per cent
P&L = £98 profit
Markets can also fall, if the market had moved down to $24.22 - $24.27, you might want to close your spread bet to limit your losses. If that were to happen, you would sell at $24.22.
Therefore, with the same £2 per cent stake:
P&L = (settlement price of the market - initial price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = ($24.22 - $24.65) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -$0.43 x £2 per cent
P&L = -£86 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Cisco Systems Market to Go Down?
One of the many benefits of using a spread bet is that investors can go short of the markets.
At the start of the example, the market was $24.60 - $24.65.
If you were to go short of Cisco Systems at $24.60 and the shares fell then the market might be re-priced at $24.08 - $24.13. Assuming this was the case, you might decide to close your bet for a profit at $24.13.
P&L = (initial price of the market - settlement price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = ($24.60 - $24.13) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = $0.47 x £2 per cent
P&L = £94 profit
Of course, if the market had increased to, as an example, $24.96 - $25.01, you might want to close your bet to restrict your losses. In that case, you would buy your spread bet at $25.01.
You would close your bet with the same £2 per cent stake:
P&L = (initial price of the market - settlement price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = ($24.60 - $25.01) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -$0.41 x £2 per cent
P&L = -£82 loss
