Coca Cola Company Trading Example
Should you decide to spread trade on US shares such as Coca Cola Company then, looking at a spread trading website, you might find a spread betting price of $56.10 - $56.17.
That means you can spread bet on Coca Cola Company shares to move higher than $56.17 or to move lower than $56.10.
When spread trading, you bet on every unit the market rises or falls. In the case of the Coca Cola market a unit is $0.01 of the share's price movement.
For example, you could choose to bet £2 for every cent that the Coca Cola Company share price goes up or down.
Betting on the Market to Go Up
If you were to buy Coca Cola Company at $56.17 and the shares rose then the spread could move to $56.87 - $56.94. If so, you might want to close your trade for a profit by selling at $56.87.
Profit or Loss = (final price of the market - opening price of the market) x stake per cent
Profit or Loss = ($56.87 - $56.17) x £2 per cent stake
Profit or Loss = $0.70 x £2 per cent
Profit or Loss = £140 profit
Markets can also fall, if the market were to drop down to $55.52 - $55.59, you may want to close your trade to restrict your losses. If that happened, you would sell your spread bet at $55.52.
You would do this with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit or Loss = (final price of the market - opening price of the market) x stake per cent
Profit or Loss = ($55.52 - $56.17) x £2 per cent stake
Profit or Loss = -$0.65 x £2 per cent
Profit or Loss = -£130 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Coca Cola Market to Go Down?
A key benefit of placing a spread trade is that investors can short the markets.
When we began this example, the market was priced at $56.10 - $56.17.
If you were to go short of Coca Cola Company at $56.10 and the shares decreased then the spread could become $55.29 - $55.36. Therefore, you might decide to close your trade at $55.36.
Profit or Loss = (opening price of the market - final price of the market) x stake per cent
Profit or Loss = ($56.10 - $55.36) x £2 per cent stake
Profit or Loss = $0.74 x £2 per cent
Profit or Loss = £148 profit
Conversely, if the market had moved up to $56.71 - $56.78, you may want to close your bet to limit your losses. If this were the case, you would buy at $56.78.
With the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit or Loss = (opening price of the market - final price of the market) x stake per cent
Profit or Loss = ($56.10 - $56.78) x £2 per cent stake
Profit or Loss = -$0.68 x £2 per cent
Profit or Loss = -£136 loss
