Please see the above tables. Where a company offers the relevant market they will also provide clients with live prices on that market.

3) Where can I find Live Charts / Candlestick Charts for Commodities Markets?

Spread betting companies often offer a variety of free data to their clients (accounts are subject to status, terms and conditions).

The most popular data, apart from live prices, tends to be the candlestick charts. The time period of the charts can usually be varied. You can often alter the candlestick charts to show market movements in the order of 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10minutes, 1 hour, 1 day or 1 week periods.

With a number of the charts you can also update the settings to help your technical analysis. For example you can add Bollinger Bands and 20, 50 and 100 point Moving Averages.

Candlestick charts are currently available with:

4) How do you Spread Bet on Commodities Markets to Go Up?

Gold Spread Betting Example

Should you decide to spread bet on a commodity like Gold then, looking at a spread betting site like Capital Spreads, at the time of writing you would see a spread trading price of $1,205.6 - $1,206.1.

As a result, you can bet on the price of Gold to increase above $1,206.1 or decrease below $1,205.6.

If you are spread betting, you trade on every unit the market moves up or down; for the Gold market a unit is $0.1 of the commodity's price movement.

For this instance, you could choose to bet £2 for every $0.1 that the price of Gold moves up or down.

Buying - Spread Betting on the Market to Go Up

If you were to buy Gold at $1,206.1 and the commodity rose then the spread might become $1,212.1 - $1,212.6. If that were to happen, you might want to close your trade for a profit by selling at $1,212.1.

P&L = (closing value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per $0.1
P&L = ($1,212.1 - $1,206.1) x £2 per $0.1 stake
P&L = $6.0 x £2 per $0.1
P&L = £120 profit

Nevertheless, if the market had moved down to, for example, $1,200.4 - $1,200.9, you may want to close your bet to limit your losses. If this were the case, you would sell the market at $1,200.4.

So, with the same £2 per $0.1 stake:

P&L = (closing value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per $0.1
P&L = ($1,200.4 - $1,206.1) x £2 per $0.1 stake
P&L = -$5.7 x £2 per $0.1
P&L = -£114 loss

5) How do you Spread Bet on the Commodities Market to Go Down?

A benefit of placing a spread trade is that investors can short the markets.

When we started this example, the spread was $1,205.6 - $1,206.1.

If you were to sell Gold at $1,205.6 and the commodity fell then the spread could become $1,198.5 - $1,199.0. If so, you could close your spread bet for a profit by buying at $1,199.0.

P&L = (initial value of the market - closing value of the market) x stake per $0.1
P&L = ($1,205.6 - $1,199.0) x £2 per $0.1 stake
P&L = $6.6 x £2 per $0.1
P&L = £132 profit

Of course, if the market had moved up to, for example, $1,211.4 - $1,211.9, you might decide to close your trade to prevent further losses. Assuming this was the case, you would buy at $1,211.9.

You would do this with the same £2 per $0.1 stake:

P&L = (initial value of the market - closing value of the market) x stake per $0.1
P&L = ($1,205.6 - $1,211.9) x £2 per $0.1 stake
P&L = -$6.3 x £2 per $0.1
P&L = -£126 loss

7) Crude OilSpread Betting Example

Should you decide to spread trade on a commodity such as Brent Crude Oil then, on visiting the Financial Spreads website, you would currently see a spread betting price of $80.00 - $80.05.

As a result, you can spread bet on a barrel of Brent Crude Oil to go above $80.05 or below $80.00.

When making a spread bet, you bet on every unit the market increases or decreases. In the case of the Brent Crude Oil market a unit is $0.01 of the commodity's price movement.

Accordingly, you could choose to bet £2 for every $0.01 that Brent Crude Oil goes up or down.

Spread Betting on the Market to Rise

If you were to go long of Brent Crude Oil at $80.05 and the commodity increased then the market might be re-priced at $80.85 - $80.90. In that case, you might decide to close your trade for a profited $80.85.

P&L = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per $0.01
P&L = ($80.85 - $80.05) x £2 per $0.01 stake
P&L = $0.80 x £2 per $0.01
P&L = £160 profit

Financial markets also move down, if the spread betting market had decreased to, as an example, $79.29 - $79.34, you might want to close your trade to limit your losses. If this were the case, you would sell your trade at $79.29.

You would close your bet with the same £2 per $0.01 stake:

P&L = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per $0.01
P&L = ($79.29 - $80.05) x £2 per $0.01 stake
P&L = -$0.76 x £2 per $0.01
P&L = -£152 loss

5) How do you Spread Bet on the Commodities Market to Go Down?

One of the benefits of placing a spread trade is that you can sell the markets.

At the start of the example, the market was $80.00 - $80.05.

If you were to go short of Brent Crude Oil at $80.00 and the commodity fell then the spread could become $79.23 - $79.28. If that happened, you might decide to close your spread bet for a profit by buying at $79.28.

P&L = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per $0.01
P&L = ($80.00 - $79.28) x £2 per $0.01 stake
P&L = $0.72 x £2 per $0.01
P&L = £144 profit

Of course, if the market had increased to, as an example, $80.63 - $80.68, you might want to close your spread bet to restrict your losses. Assuming this was the case, you would buy the market at $80.68.

You would do this with the same £2 per $0.01 stake:

P&L = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per $0.01
P&L = ($80.00 - $80.68) x £2 per $0.01 stake
P&L = -$0.68 x £2 per $0.01
P&L = -£136 loss
