If you decide to spread trade on Danish shares such as Danske Bank then, on visiting a spread trading website like Financial Spreads, at the moment you would find a spread of 142.0 DKK - 143.2 DKK.
As a result, you can spread trade on Danske Bank shares to go above 143.2 DKK or below 142.0 DKK.
With spread trading, you bet on every unit the market moves up or down. In the case of the Danske Bank market a unit is 1 Danish Krone of the share's price movement.
For example, you could choose to spread bet £15 for every Krone that the Danske Bank share price rises or falls.
Buying - Spread Betting on the Danish Shares to Rise
If you bought Danske Bank at 143.2 DKK and the shares rose then the spread could move to 148.6 DKK - 149.8 DKK. In that case, you might choose to close your spread bet for a profit at 148.6 DKK.
P&L = (closing price of the market - initial price of the market) x stake per Krone
P&L = (148.6 DKK - 143.2 DKK) x £15 per Krone stake
P&L = 5.4 DKK x £15 per Krone
P&L = £81.00 profit
The markets can of course fall, if the market were to drop down to, as an example, 138.2 DKK - 139.4 DKK, you could choose to close your trade to limit your losses. If that were to happen, you would sell the market at 138.2 DKK.
So, with the same £15 per Krone stake:
P&L = (closing price of the market - initial price of the market) x stake per Krone
P&L = (138.2 DKK - 143.2 DKK) x £15 per Krone stake
P&L = -5.0 DKK x £15 per Krone
P&L = -£75.00 loss
Selling - Spread Betting on the Danish Shares to Fall
A major advantage of spread betting is that investors can short the markets.
When we started this example, the spread betting price was 142.0 DKK - 143.2 DKK.
If you were to go short of Danske Bank at 142.0 DKK and the shares fell then the spread might change to 136.0 DKK - 137.2 DKK. If that happened, you could close your bet for a profit, if so you would buy at 137.2 DKK.
P&L = (initial price of the market - closing price of the market) x stake per Krone
P&L = (142.0 DKK - 137.2 DKK) x £15 per Krone stake
P&L = 4.8 DKK x £15 per Krone
P&L = £72.00 profit
However, if the market had moved up to 145.3 DKK - 146.5 DKK, you may want to close your bet to limit your losses. Assuming this was the case, you would buy at 146.5 DKK.
You would close your bet with the same £15 per Krone stake:
P&L = (initial price of the market - closing price of the market) x stake per Krone
P&L = (142.0 DKK - 146.5 DKK) x £15 per Krone stake
P&L = -4.5 DKK x £15 per Krone
P&L = -£67.50 loss
