4) How do you Spread Bet on the Du Pont Market to Go Up?
Du Pont Spread Betting Example
If you are going to spread trade on US shares such as Du Pont then, looking at a spread betting site like Capital Spreads, at the time of writing you would see a spread betting price of $34.00 - $34.05.
This means you could spread bet on Du Pont shares to increase above $34.05 or decrease below $34.00.
When spread betting, you trade on every unit the market goes up or down; with the Du Pont market a unit is $0.01 of the share's price movement.
As an example, you could choose to trade £2 for every cent that the Du Pont share price moves up or down.
Spread Betting on the Market to Rise
If you were to buy Du Pont at $34.05 and the shares rose then the spread might become $34.56 - $34.61. Therefore, you could close your spread bet for a profit, if so you would sell at $34.56.
Profit/Loss = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($34.56 - $34.05) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = $0.51 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = £102 profit
Conversely, if the market decreased to, for example, $33.57 - $33.62, you may decide to close your spread bet to restrict your losses. If that happened, you would sell at $33.57.
So, with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($33.57 - $34.05) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -$0.48 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£96 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Du Pont Market to Go Down?
One of the advantages of placing a spread bet is that you can sell the markets.
Initially, the spread betting price was $34.00 - $34.05.
If you were to go short of Du Pont at $34.00 and the shares fell then the spread could move to $33.47 - $33.52. If so, you might choose to close your spread bet for a profit at $33.52.
Profit/Loss = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($34.00 - $33.52) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = $0.48 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = £96 profit
However, if the market had moved up to, for example, $34.40 - $34.45, you could choose to close your bet to limit your losses. If that were to happen, you would buy the market at $34.45.
You would close your bet with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($34.00 - $34.45) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -$0.45 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£90 loss
