If you decide to spread bet on Dutch shares such as Philips then, on visiting a spread betting company's website, you may find a spread trading price of €22.93 - €23.00.
Therefore, you could spread bet on Philips shares to increase above €23.00 or decrease below €22.93.
When making a spread bet, you trade on every unit the market moves up or down; for the Philips market a unit is €0.01 of the share's price movement.
With this example, you might choose to trade £2 for every cent that the Philips share price goes up or down.
Spread Betting on the Dutch Shares to Rise
If you were to go long of Philips at €23.00 and the shares increased then the spread might change to €23.61 - €23.68. If that were to happen, you might choose to close your trade for a profit by selling at €23.61.
P&L = (final price of the market - opening price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€23.61 - €23.00) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = €0.61 x £2 per cent
P&L = £122 profit
On the other hand, if the market had decreased to, for example, €22.44 - €22.51, you may want to close your spread bet to restrict your losses. If so, you would sell your spread bet at €22.44.
With the same £2 per cent stake:
P&L = (final price of the market - opening price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€22.44 - €23.00) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.56 x £2 per cent
P&L = -£112 loss
Spread Betting on the Dutch Shares to Fall
A benefit of placing a spread bet is that investors with a spread betting account can go short of the markets.
At the beginning of this example, the market was priced at €22.93 - €23.00.
If you were to sell Philips at €22.93 and the shares fell then the spread might change to €22.19 - €22.26. Assuming this was the case, you might decide to close your bet for a profit at €22.26.
P&L = (opening price of the market - final price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€22.93 - €22.26) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = €0.67 x £2 per cent
P&L = £134 profit
Conversely, if the market increased to €23.48 - €23.55, you could choose to close your bet to prevent further losses. If this were the case, you would buy back at €23.55.
So, with the same £2 per cent stake:
P&L = (opening price of the market - final price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€22.93 - €23.55) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.62 x £2 per cent
P&L = -£124 loss
