Ericsson Spread Trading Example
If you decide to spread trade on Swedish shares such as Ericsson then, on visiting a spread betting website such as Capital Spreads, you might find a spread trading price of 71.3 SEK - 72.0 SEK.
That means you could spread trade on Ericsson shares to move above 72.0 SEK or below 71.3 SEK.
With spread trading, you bet on every unit the market increases or decreases. With the Ericsson market a unit is 1 Swedish Krona of the share's price movement.
Accordingly, you could choose to trade £15 for every Krona that the Ericsson share price goes up or down.
Spread Betting on the Market to Rise
If you were to buy Ericsson at 72.0 SEK and the shares rose then the spread might become 77.2 SEK - 77.9 SEK. If this were the case, you might decide to close your spread bet for a profit at 77.2 SEK.
Your Profits (or Losses) = (closing level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per Krona
Your Profits (or Losses) = (77.2 SEK - 72.0 SEK) x £15 per Krona stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = 5.2 SEK x £15 per Krona
Your Profits (or Losses) = £78.00 profit
Financial markets also move down, if the market were to drop to, as an example, 67.3 SEK - 68.0 SEK, you may want to close your bet to prevent further losses. If that were to happen, you would sell your spread bet at 67.3 SEK.
You would close your bet with the same £15 per Krona stake:
Your Profits (or Losses) = (closing level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per Krona
Your Profits (or Losses) = (67.3 SEK - 72.0 SEK) x £15 per Krona stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = -4.7 SEK x £15 per Krona
Your Profits (or Losses) = -£70.50 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Ericsson Market to Go Down?
One major advantage of using a spread bet is that investors can go short of the markets.
At the beginning of this example, the spread betting price was 71.3 SEK - 72.0 SEK.
If you were to go short of Ericsson at 71.3 SEK and the shares decreased then the spread could change to 65.7 SEK - 66.4 SEK. Assuming this was the case, you might choose to close your bet for a profit at 66.4 SEK.
Your Profits (or Losses) = (opening level of the market - closing level of the market) x stake per Krona
Your Profits (or Losses) = (71.3 SEK - 66.4 SEK) x £15 per Krona stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = 4.9 SEK x £15 per Krona

The markets can of course rise, if the market increased to, for example, 75.0 SEK - 75.7 SEK, you may decide to close your trade to limit your losses. If so, you would buy your spread bet at 75.7 SEK.
Therefore, with the same £15 per Krona stake:
Your Profits (or Losses) = (opening level of the market - closing level of the market) x stake per Krona
Your Profits (or Losses) = (71.3 SEK - 75.7 SEK) x £15 per Krona stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = -4.4 SEK x £15 per Krona
Your Profits (or Losses) = -£66.00 loss
