4) How do you Spread Bet on the Euro - Swiss Franc Market to Go Up?
Euro/Swiss Franc Spread Betting Example
If you decide to spread bet on a foreign exchange pair such as the Euro/Swiss Franc then, on visiting a spread betting company's website, you may see a spread of SFr 1.5109 - SFr 1.5113.
This means you could spread trade on the Euro/Swiss Franc to move higher than SFr 1.5113 or to move lower than SFr 1.5109.
If you are spread trading, you trade on every unit the market moves up or down; in the case of the Euro/Swiss Franc market a unit is SFr 0.0001 of the forex pair's price movement.
For instance, you could decide to trade £5 for every SFr 0.0001 the Euro/Swiss Franc goes up or down.
Betting on the Market to Go Up
If you were to go long of the Euro/Swiss Franc at SFr 1.5113 and the forex pair increased then the spread could change to SFr 1.5132 - SFr 1.5136. If so, you might decide to take your profits by closing your trade at SFr 1.5132.
Your P&L = (final value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per SFr 0.0001
Your P&L = (SFr 1.5132 - SFr 1.5113) x £5 per SFr 0.0001 stake
Your P&L = SFr 0.0019 x £5 per SFr 0.0001
Your P&L = £95 profit
However, if the market were to drop to, for example, SFr 1.5096 - SFr 1.5100, you may decide to close your spread bet to prevent further losses. Assuming this was the case, you would sell the market at SFr 1.5096.
Therefore, with the same £5 per SFr 0.0001 stake:
Your P&L = (final value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per SFr 0.0001
Your P&L = (SFr 1.5096 - SFr 1.5113) x £5 per SFr 0.0001 stake
Your P&L = -SFr 0.0017 x £5 per SFr 0.0001
Your P&L = -£85 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Euro - Swiss Franc Market to Go Down?
A key advantage of using a spread bet is that you can go short of the markets.
If you recall, initially the market was SFr 1.5109 - SFr 1.5113.
If you were to go short of the Euro/Swiss Franc at SFr 1.5109 and the forex pair decreased then the spread could move to SFr 1.5087 - SFr 1.5091. In that case, you might decide to close your spread trade at SFr 1.5091.
Your P&L = (initial value of the market - final value of the market) x stake per SFr 0.0001
Your P&L = (SFr 1.5109 - SFr 1.5091) x £5 per SFr 0.0001 stake
Your P&L = SFr 0.0018 x £5 per SFr 0.0001
Your P&L = £90 profit
Of course, if the market had moved up to SFr 1.5121 - SFr 1.5125, you might want to close your bet to restrict your losses. If that happened, you would buy your spread bet at SFr 1.5125.
You would do this with the same £5 per SFr 0.0001 stake:
Your P&L = (initial value of the market - final value of the market) x stake per SFr 0.0001
Your P&L = (SFr 1.5109 - SFr 1.5125) x £5 per SFr 0.0001 stake
Your P&L = -SFr 0.0016 x £5 per SFr 0.0001
Your P&L = -£80 loss
