4) How do you Spread Bet on the FBD Market to Go Up?
FBD Holdings Trading Example
Should you decide to spread bet on Irish shares like FBD Holdings then, on visiting a spread betting site like Capital Spreads, you would currently see a spread of €6.30 - €6.46.
Therefore, you could spread trade on FBD Holdings shares to move above €6.46 or below €6.30.
When making a spread bet, investors trade on every unit the market moves up or down. In the case of the FBD Holdings market a unit is €0.01 of the share's price movement.
With this example, you might decide to bet £5 for every cent that the FBD Holdings share price moves up or down.
Spread Betting on the Market to Increase
If you bought FBD Holdings at €6.46 and the shares went up then the market might be re-priced at €6.75 - €6.91. In that case, you might choose to close your trade for a profit by selling at €6.75.
Profit/Loss = (final price of the market - opening price of the market) x stake per cent

The markets can of course fall, if the market had decreased to €6.19 - €6.35, you may decide to close your bet to restrict your losses. If that happened, you would sell the market at €6.19.
You would do this with the same £5 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (final price of the market - opening price of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€6.19 - €6.46) x £5 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -€0.27 x £5 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£135 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the FBD Market to Go Down?
One major benefit of spread trading is that investors can sell the markets.
To start with, the market was €6.30 - €6.46.
If you were to sell FBD Holdings at €6.30 and the shares fell then the spread could move to €5.88 - €6.04. Assuming this was the case, you might decide to take your profits by closing your spread bet at €6.04.
Profit/Loss = (opening price of the market - final price of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€6.30 - €6.04) x £5 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = €0.26 x £5 per cent
Profit/Loss = £130 profit
Nevertheless, if the market had moved up to, for example, €6.38 - €6.54, you may want to close your trade to restrict your losses. If that were to happen, you would buy your spread bet at €6.54.
Therefore, with the same £5 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (opening price of the market - final price of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€6.30 - €6.54) x £5 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -€0.24 x £5 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£120 loss
