A brief look at last week and the week ahead, the Weekly Review from IG Index.
Last Week's Trading Highlights
Six days of gains for the UK's blue-chip index came to an abrupt halt, despite Thursday's shock 1.5% interest-rate cut by the Bank of England. The repo rate, now down to 3%, is at its lowest level since 1955 after the most dramatic drop for 27 years. The MPC's surprise move only served to emphasise the severity of the economic downturn though, and the FTSE closed down 5.7% to 4272.4 on Thursday, having added 19.1% since the previous Tuesday. The MPC's announcement, closely followed by the ECB's decision to cut eurozone rates by 0.5% to 3.25%, arrived as the IMF forecast the UK economy would contract by 1.3% in 2009, worse than previously predicted.
Indicators
A fresh wave of downbeat indicators and company reports did little to dispel the current gloom. Monday's CIPS index showed manufacturing at 41.5, marginally up on September's level but still indicative of contraction and the second-weakest reading since the survey's 1992 inception. Export orders were also down to a seven-year low.
UK Housing Market / Car Market
The housing market slide shows little sign of abating: Thursday's Halifax survey revealed prices fell by 2.2% last month compared to September, down 13.7% annually. The average house price of £168,031 is now at October 2005 levels.
A clear sign of the current tough conditions emerged from Thursday's SMMT survey, which showed October's new car sales slumped 23% year-on-year, the most severe decline since 1991.
UK Markets
A string of company updates mostly added to the negative sentiment last week, though not every firm unveiled weaker numbers. Marks & Spencer confirmed six-month profit sank 34% year-on-year to £297.8 million, while fellow retailer Next revealed like-for-like sales in the last quarter fell 4.1% compared to 2007. In contrast low-cost rival Primark is thriving in the current climate, unveiling a like-for-like sales jump of 4% in the year to 13 September, helping parent company Associated British Foods to a 3% rise in annual profit. Meanwhile record fuel prices haven't helped airlines Ryanair and British Airways, the former reporting a 47% drop in half-year profit and the latter a huge 91.6% year-on-year fall to £52 million.
Inflationary concerns are likely to continue hitting the headlines, with Monday's PPI figures coming ahead of the Bank of England's quarterly inflation report on Wednesday. The MPC last week said inflationary risks have moved ‘decisively' to the downside and analysts are expecting the producer price index to fall to 7.4% from 8.5% in September. Other significant midweek data includes labour market figures at home and the latest trade balance and Treasury budget reports in the US on Thursday.
Company Results and Reports
On the earnings schedule, look out for half-year figures from Cable & Wireless, Vodafone and Sainsbury's at home and quarterlies from Starbucks, Microsoft and Macy's in the US early on in the week. On Thursday, quarterly results from Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, will garner interest ahead of the release of retail sales data in the US on Friday.
