4) How do you Spread Bet on the France 40 Market to Go Up?
France 40 Spread Betting Example
If you are going to spread trade on an index like the France 40 then, on visiting a spread trading company's website, you would currently find a spread betting price of 3970 - 3974.
This means you could spread bet on the France 40 to go higher than 3974 or to go lower than 3970.
When you spread bet, you bet on every unit the market moves up or down; in the case of the France 40 market a unit is 1 point of the index's price movement.
As an example, you might choose to spread bet £3 for every point the France 40 increases or decreases.
Buying - Spread Betting on the France 40 to Increase
If you bought the CAC 40 at 3974 and the index went up then the market might be re-priced at 4006 - 4010. Therefore, you might decide to close your bet for a profit by selling at 4006.
Your Profits (or Losses) = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per point
Your Profits (or Losses) = (4006 - 3974) x £3 per point stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = 32 points x £3 per point
Your Profits (or Losses) = £96 profit
The markets can of course fall, if the market were to drop to, for example, 3946 - 3950, you may decide to close your spread bet to prevent further losses. If this were the case, you would sell your trade at 3946.
So, with the same £3 per point stake:
Your Profits (or Losses) = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per point
Your Profits (or Losses) = (3946 - 3974) x £3 per point stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = -28 points x £3 per point
Your Profits (or Losses) = -£84 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the France 40 Market to Go Down?
A major advantage of placing a spread trade is that you can short the markets.
At the start of the example, the spread was 3970 - 3974.
If you were to sell the France 40 at 3970 and the index fell then the spread might change to 3931 - 3935. If so, you could close your spread bet for a profit, if so you would buy at 3935.
Your Profits (or Losses) = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per point
Your Profits (or Losses) = (3970 - 3935) x £3 per point stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = 35 points x £3 per point
Your Profits (or Losses) = £105 profit
Markets can also rise, if the CAC 40had moved up to, for example, 3997 - 4001, you might want to close your bet to limit your losses. Assuming this was the case, you would buy at 4001.
Therefore, with the same £3 per point stake:
Your Profits (or Losses) = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per point
Your Profits (or Losses) = (3970 - 4001) x £3 per point stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = -31 points x £3 per point
Your Profits (or Losses) = -£93 loss
