» US markets rallied sharply yesterday, as better-than-expected US housing starts and improved German business confidence data for December eased concerns about the global economy.
» PulteGroup, the top gainer on the S&P 500 index, rallied 10.4%, while Post Properties, D.R. Horton and Beazer jumped between 3.2% and 15.1%, as housing starts and building permits both rose sharply in November.
» Investment bank, Jefferies surged 22.9%, after its fiscal fourth-quarter profit surpassed market expectations.
» F5 Networks, Juniper Networks and Sprint Nextel jumped between 6.7% and 9.3%, as their peer AT&T dropped its bid to acquire Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile USA.
» Bank of America, Morgan Stanley and Citigroup rose between 3.7% and 4.6%, as risk appetite improved among investors.
» DJIA soared 2.9% to close at 12,103.6. NASDAQ surged 3.2% to settle at 2,603.7. S&P 500 jumped 3.0% to settle at 1,241.3.

» Asian markets are trading higher this morning, taking cues from strong overnight gains on Wall Street, shrugging off disappointing comments from Bank of Japan and data that showed an increase in Japan’s trade deficit in November. Moreover, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s pledge to support exports and funding for small companies, boosted market sentiment further.
» In Japan, Mitsui OSK Lines and Nippon Yusen KK traded higher, after they agreed to work with other shipping lines to curb falling cargo rates.
» Sony, Toyota Motor and Honda Motor, paced gains, amid optimism that global demand would recover.
» In Hong Kong, HSBC Holdings gained value, on news that it would sell its Japanese private-banking arm to Credit Suisse.
» In South Korea, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering traded higher, on hopes that it would bag a KRW1.3 trillion order for three submarines.
» Nikkei 225 index is trading 1.4% higher, at 8,454.7. Hang Seng index is trading 1.6% higher at 18,368.7, while the Kospi index is trading 3.1% higher at 1,849.0.
