Should you decide to spread bet on German shares like Adidas then, on visiting a site like Financial Spreads, you would currently see a spread trading price of €47.54 - €47.66.
That means you could spread trade on Adidas shares to increase higher than €47.66 or to decrease lower than €47.54.
When spread betting, investors bet on every unit the market increases or decreases; for the Adidas market a unit is €0.01 of the share's price movement.
For instance, you might choose to spread bet £2 for every cent that the Adidas share price increases or decreases.
Spread Betting on the German Stock to Go Up
If you bought Adidas at €47.66 and the shares increased then the spread might become €48.33 - €48.45. If that happened, you might choose to close your trade for a profit at €48.33.
Profit or Loss = (closing value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit or Loss = (€48.33 - €47.66) x £2 per cent stake
Profit or Loss = €0.67 x £2 per cent
Profit or Loss = £134 profit
However, if the market decreased to, as an example, €47.06 - €47.18, you may want to close your spread bet to prevent further losses. If that were to happen, you would sell the market at €47.06.
You would close your bet with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit or Loss = (closing value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit or Loss = (€47.06 - €47.66) x £2 per cent stake
Profit or Loss = -€0.60 x £2 per cent
Profit or Loss = -£120 loss
Spread Betting on German Shares to Go Down
One of the many advantages with spreads is that spread betting companies let you go short of the markets.
Initially, the spread betting price was €47.54 - €47.66.
If you were to sell Adidas at €47.54 and the shares decreased then the spread might become €46.85 - €46.97. If so, you could close your bet for a profit by buying at €46.97.
Profit or Loss = (initial value of the market - closing value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit or Loss = (€47.54 - €46.97) x £2 per cent stake
Profit or Loss = €0.57 x £2 per cent
Profit or Loss = £114 profit
Markets can also rise, if the market increased to, as an example, €47.93 - €48.05, you may want to close your bet to limit your losses. If this were the case, you would buy back at €48.05.
Therefore, with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit or Loss = (initial value of the market - closing value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit or Loss = (€47.54 - €48.05) x £2 per cent stake
Profit or Loss = -€0.51 x £2 per cent
Profit or Loss = -£102 loss
