4) How do you Spread Bet on the Goldman Sachs Market to Go Up?
Goldman Sachs Trading Example
If you are going to spread bet on US shares such as Goldman Sachs then, on visiting a spread trading site like Financial Spreads, you would currently find a spread betting price of $174.02 - $174.27.
This means you could spread bet on Goldman Sachs to move above $174.27 or below $174.02.
With spread trading, you bet on every unit the market rises or falls; specifically, for the Goldman Sachs market a unit is $0.01 of the share's price movement.
In this case, you could decide to bet £2 for every cent Goldman Sachs increases or decreases.
Spread Betting on the Market to Rise
If you were to buy Goldman Sachs at $174.27 and the shares increased then the market might be re-priced at $174.97 - $175.22. If that were to happen, you might decide to close your spread bet for a profit at $174.97.
Your Profits (or Losses) = (settlement value of the market - opening value of the market) x stake per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = ($174.97 - $174.27) x £2 per cent stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = $0.70 x £2 per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = £140 profit
The markets can of course fall, if the market had decreased to $173.62 - $173.87, you might decide to close your trade to limit your losses. Assuming this was the case, you would sell the market at $173.62.
Therefore, with the same £2 per cent stake:
Your Profits (or Losses) = (settlement value of the market - opening value of the market) x stake per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = ($173.62 - $174.27) x £2 per cent stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = -$0.65 x £2 per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = -£130 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Goldman Sachs Market to Go Down?
One advantage of spread trading is that you can short the markets.
When we began this example, the price was $174.02 - $174.27.
If you were to go short of Goldman Sachs at $174.02 and the shares fell then the spread could move to $173.14 - $173.39. Therefore, you might decide to close your trade for a profit at $173.39.
Your Profits (or Losses) = (opening value of the market - settlement value of the market) x stake per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = ($174.02 - $173.39) x £2 per cent stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = $0.63 x £2 per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = £126 profit
However, if the market were to rise to, as an example, $174.36 - $174.61, you might decide to close your spread bet to limit your losses. If so, you would buy the market at $174.61.
You would do this with the same £2 per cent stake:
Your Profits (or Losses) = (opening value of the market - settlement value of the market) x stake per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = ($174.02 - $174.61) x £2 per cent stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = -$0.59 x £2 per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = -£118 loss
