4) How do you Spread Bet on the HMV Market to Go Up?
HMV Spread Betting Example
If you decide to spread bet on UK shares like HMV then, on visiting a spread betting company's website such as Capital Spreads, at the moment you would see a spread of 22.9p - 23.3p.
Therefore, you can bet on HMV to increase higher than 23.3p or to decrease lower than 22.9p.
With spread betting, you trade on every unit the market goes up or down. In the case of the HMV market a unit is 1p of the share's price movement.
For example, you could decide to bet £25 for every penny HMV increases or decreases.
Buying - Spread Betting on the Market to Go Up
If you were to buy HMV at 23.3p and the shares rose then the spread could become 25.9p - 26.3p. Assuming this was the case, you could close your spread bet at 25.9p.
Your P&L = (closing price of the market - initial price of the market) x stake per penny
Your P&L = (25.9p - 23.3p) x £25 per penny stake
Your P&L = 2.6p x £25 per penny
Your P&L = £65.00 profit
However, if the market were to drop to, as an example, 20.5p - 20.9p, you could choose to close your bet to limit your losses. Therefore, you would sell the market at 20.5p.
You would do this with the same £25 per penny stake:
Your P&L = (closing price of the market - initial price of the market) x stake per penny
Your P&L = (20.5p - 23.3p) x £25 per penny stake
Your P&L = -2.8p x £25 per penny
Your P&L = -£70.00 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the HMV Market to Go Down?
A key advantage of placing a spread trade is that investors can go short of the markets.
At the start of the example, the market was priced at 22.9p - 23.3p.
If you were to go short of HMV at 22.9p and the shares decreased then the spread could move to 19.6p - 20.0p. If so, you might decide to close your spread trade at 20.0p.
Your P&L = (initial price of the market - closing price of the market) x stake per penny
Your P&L = (22.9p - 20.0p) x £25 per penny stake
Your P&L = 2.9p x £25 per penny
Your P&L = £72.50 profit
The markets can of course rise, if the market were to rise to 25.7p - 26.1p, you may want to close your spread bet to restrict your losses. If that were to happen, you would buy your spread bet at 26.1p.
So, with the same £25 per penny stake:
Your P&L = (initial price of the market - closing price of the market) x stake per penny
Your P&L = (22.9p - 26.1p) x £25 per penny stake
Your P&L = -3.2p x £25 per penny
Your P&L = -£80.00 loss
