4) How do you Spread Bet on the Home Depot Market to Go Up?
Home Depot Spread Trading Example
If you are going to spread trade on US shares such as Home Depot then, looking at a spread betting company's website, at the time of writing you would find a spread of $28.40 - $28.45.
That means you could spread bet on Home Depot shares to go above $28.45 or below $28.40.
With spread betting, investors trade on every unit the market rises or falls. For the Home Depot market a unit is $0.01 of the share's price movement.
As an example, you might decide to bet £2 for every cent that the Home Depot share price moves up or down.
Spread Betting on the Market to Increase
If you were to buy Home Depot at $28.45 and the shares rose then the spread could change to $28.91 - $28.96. Therefore, you might decide to close your bet for a profit at $28.91.
Profit/Loss = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($28.91 - $28.45) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = $0.46 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = £92 profit
The markets can of course fall, if the market had moved down to $28.01 - $28.06, you may want to close your bet to prevent further losses. Assuming this was the case, you would sell your spread bet at $28.01.
So, with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($28.01 - $28.45) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -$0.44 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£88 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Home Depot Market to Go Down?
A benefit of spread betting is that investors can go short of the markets.
When we started this example, the price was $28.40 - $28.45.
If you were to sell Home Depot at $28.40 and the shares fell then the spread might become $27.92 - $27.97. If this were the case, you might choose to close your bet for a profit by buying at $27.97.
Profit/Loss = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($28.40 - $27.97) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = $0.43 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = £86 profit
Financial markets also move up, if the market had increased to, as an example, $28.77 - $28.82, you may decide to close your trade to restrict your losses. In that case, you would buy your spread bet at $28.82.
Therefore, with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($28.40 - $28.82) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -$0.42 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£84 loss
