Racing Spread Betting - 27 Nov 08

The Hennessy Gold Cup, one of the biggest races of the National Hunt season, gets underway at 2.40pm at Newbury on Saturday. Spread bettors who have sold SP’s in recent years haven’t done too badly as there has only been one double-priced winner in the last five renewals. Horses towards the top of the handicap have prospered recently with all of the last three carrying more than 11st and two of the past three winning off top weight. Playing winning distances on the spreads can be a dangerous pursuit at Newbury and is obviously weather dependent. Denman turned this into a precession last year, winning by 11 lengths, whilst Strong Flow five years ago won by an ever-increasing 14 lengths.

The Paddy Power Gold Cup, the first big handicap of the jumps season, takes place at HQ on Saturday and in the past decade horses carrying anything from 10st to 11st9lbs have been successful. Sellers of starting prices will be pleased that five favourites have won in the last 10 runnings, although four of them were trained by the ‘Open Meeting Maestro’ Martin Pipe. The last two jollies have been beaten and two of the last three winners have returned a double figure price. Those spread punters playing the winning distances market will be keeping an eye out on the weather as Saturday approaches. Last year’s winner L’Antartique won by an ever-diminshing neck, but sellers won’t be too pleased to hear that five of the last eight winners have won by at least 3 lengths.

The Racing Post Trophy, the final UK Group 1 flat race of the season, takes place at Doncaster on Saturday and has been one of the strongest Derby trials in recent years. Online horse racing betting has increased markedly in recent years and those looking to sell SP’s with Sporting Index will be pleased to hear that four of the last six favourites have hosed up in this race. They haven’t had it all their own way though, as those two winners who weren’t favourites returned at 20/1 and 25/1. Winning distance spread buyers will be hoping for a repeat of last year’s winner Ibn Khaldun, who won by 3 lengths. That was the biggest winning distance since Commander Collins’ 7-lenth rout in 1998, whilst no horse has won by less than 3/4’s of a length in that time.

The last major day of the flat racing season takes place at Newmarket on Saturday, with seven top quality races on aptly named Champions Day. The action opens up with the Group 2 Challenge Stakes and those horse racing punters who like to dabble in the SP’s market will be intrigued to learn that in the last eight years, four horses have won at a price of exactly 20/1. Three of those have been trained by Barry Hills and sellers of SP’s will not be pleased that only one favourite has been successful in the past 11 years. That record improves with the second race on the card, the Darley Dewhurst Stakes, which has seen the last two favourites win, but SP buyers only have to go back five years to find a 33/1 winner.

There is some fantastic Group action but the highlight of the day is undoubtedly the second leg of the Autumn Double – the Cesarewitch. Sellers of SP’s with Sporting Index will be hoping to see hot favourite Askar Tau hose up, but they should be warned that Chantry at 4/1 in 1953 was the shortest priced winner since 1945, whilst only one favourite has been successful in the last 15 years. All is not lost for buyers though, as 13 of the past 15 winners have all been 16/1 or less.

Racing Spread Betting - 3 Oct 08

There is some fantastic horseracing action this weekend and the highlight on these shores is the first leg of the Autumn Double, the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket. This is one of the biggest handicaps of the entire flat season and buyers of SP’s on the spreads will be hoping for a repeat of 2004 winner Spanish Don who came in at 100/1. However, since then two of the last three favourites have obliged and half of the last 10 winners have been single-figure prices, which will please the sellers. Only one horse in the past decade has won with a single-figure draw (Spanish Don), although Pipedreamer wasn’t too far away in stall 11 last year. 9 stone or more has proven a tough burden to carry, with only two of the past 10 winners racing off that mark. Winning distance punters might expect this cavalry charge to go right to the wire, but two of the past three winners have won by 2 ½ lengths or more.

The key racing action of the weekend comes from Ascot and the winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes will be crowned Europe’s top miler. Spread bettors looking to buy winning distances will be disappointed to find that only twice since Dubai Millennium crucified the field in 1999 has the winner crossed the line more than one and a half lengths in front. Sellers of SP’s have reason to be happy as although only four of the past 10 favourites have won the race, only two have been priced bigger than 7/1. The race is open to all ages and five-year-olds have won four of the last five renewals. However, if that stat is to be repeated, then punters will only have Racinger (probably available to buy at 3 in the Sporting Index win market on the day) and Sabana Perdida (around 28/1 at the time of writing) running for them.

The St Leger, the final classic of the flat season, takes place at Doncaster on Saturday and with the way the ground has been lately, buyers of winning distances will be hoping for some more downpours. The 1m6f stamina test has actually been a happy hunting ground for favourites in recent years, with seven of the last 10 winning, obviously a pleasing stat for those selling SP’s with Sporting Index. However, despite the strong record of favourites, it may come as a surprise that in the past six runnings, only one horse has won by a distance of more than 1 ¼ lengths (and that was only 2 ½).

Horse Racing fans are in for a real treat this weekend with three of the six English and Irish meetings on Saturday staging Group races. Kempton hosts two Group 3 races on its all-weather surface, Leopardstown stages a Group 3 contest along with two Group 1 races, one of which is the much anticipated Irish Champions Stakes. Let’s not also forget that rain-sodden Haydock hosts the Group 1 Sprint Cup.

The rain still continues to fall on Haydock and officials have had plastic covers all over the track since last Saturday in an attempt to save the meeting. The ground looks sure to be heavy so buyers of winning distances will be keeping a close eye on things as the runners tend to get strung out on bottomless ground. However, statistics show that this is not the case with the Sprint Cup. Only three times over the last ten years has the winning margin been further than a length. Those interested in selling Winning SP’s should be aware that although the shortest priced winner of the Sprint Cup over the last decade was the Saeed Bin Suroor trained Diktat at 13/8 back in 1999, the race has served up plenty of shock winners in the past.

The most eagerly awaited race of the weekend is the potential rematch between Duke of Marmalade and New Approach in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. Whether both horses take their place in the line-up on Saturday remains to be seen, but the race will be a highlight regardless. Trainer Aidan O’Brien is bidding to saddle his sixth winner in this race in the last ten years. Buyers of winning distances will again be hard pressed to find success, as only once in the last eight years has a horse been victorious by a margin greater than a length, and that incidentally was Dylan Thomas, a former stablemate of Duke of Marmalade, who won the race by one and a half lengths last year.

Sandown Park plays host to the most prestigious race of the weekend, the Group Three Solario Stakes on Saturday. The ground is currently good for this seven furlong contest for two year-olds which, in the past has thrown up some decent horses. The last two winners of this race have gone off as short-priced favourites, but these are the only two from the last ten years to have done so which will please buyers of SP’s. Those spread bettors looking to buy Sandown winning distances will take great heart from Ravens Pass’ demolition of a quality field last year when he romped away to win by seven lengths. Sellers, however, will be more encouraged that prior to 2007, none of the previous nine winners had won by more than two and a half lengths.
