4) How do you Spread Bet on the IBM Market to Go Up?
IBM Financial Spread Trading Example
Should you decide to spread bet on US shares like IBM then, looking at a spread betting website like Financial Spreads, at the moment you would find a spread of $132.51 - $132.68.
Therefore, you could spread bet on IBM shares to go above $132.68 or below $132.51.
When spread betting, you trade on every unit the market moves up or down. In the case of the IBM market a unit is $0.01 of the share's price movement.
For this example, you could decide to trade £1 for every cent that the IBM share price moves up or down.
Buying - Spread Betting on the Market to Rise
If you bought IBM at $132.68 and the shares increased then the spread could become $134.01 - $134.18. Therefore, you could close your spread bet at $134.01.
Profit/Loss = (settlement price of the market - initial price of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($134.01 - $132.68) x £1 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = $1.33 x £1 per cent
Profit/Loss = £133 profit
However, if the market had moved down to, as an example, $131.42 - $131.59, you may want to close your bet to prevent further losses. Assuming this was the case, you would sell the market at $131.42.
So, with the same £1 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (settlement price of the market - initial price of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($131.42 - $132.68) x £1 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -$1.26 x £1 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£126 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the IBM Market to Go Down?
A key benefit of spread trading is that investors can sell the markets.
The initial market was priced at $132.51 - $132.68.
If you were to go short of IBM at $132.51 and the shares went down then the spread might change to $131.15 - $131.32. In that case, you could decide to take your profits by closing your spread trade at $131.32.
Profit/Loss = (initial price of the market - settlement price of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($132.51 - $131.32) x £1 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = $1.19 x £1 per cent
Profit/Loss = £119 profit
Of course, if the market had moved up to, for example, $133.47 - $133.64, you may decide to close your trade to limit your losses. If this were the case, you would buy back at $133.64.
You would do this with the same £1 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (initial price of the market - settlement price of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($132.51 - $133.64) x £1 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -$1.13 x £1 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£113 loss
