Should you decide to spread bet on an index like the Johannesburg Index then, looking at a spread betting company's website, you may find a spread trading price of 25563 - 25583.
As a result, you can bet on the Johannesburg Index to increase above 25583 or decrease below 25563.
With spread betting, investors bet on every unit the market goes up or down; in the case of the Johannesburg Index market a unit is 1 point of the index's price movement.
For this instance, you could decide to spread bet £2 for every point the Johannesburg Index goes up or down.
Buying - Spread Betting on the Market to Increase
If you were to buy the Johannesburg Index at 25583 and the index increased then the spread might become 25634 - 25654. If that were to happen, you might choose to close your spread bet for a profit by selling at 25634.
Profit/Loss = (final value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per point
Profit/Loss = (25634 - 25583) x £2 per point stake
Profit/Loss = 51 points x £2 per point
Profit/Loss = £102 profit
On the other hand, if the market had decreased to, for example, 25538 - 25558, you could choose to close your bet to limit your losses. If so, you would sell back at 25538.
You would close your bet with the same £2 per point stake:
Profit/Loss = (final value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per point
Profit/Loss = (25538 - 25583) x £2 per point stake
Profit/Loss = -45 points x £2 per point
Profit/Loss = -£90 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Johannesburg Index Market to Go Down?
A key benefit of placing a spread trade is that investors can short the markets.
At the start of the example, the spread betting price was 25563 - 25583.
If you were to go short of the Johannesburg Index at 25563 and the index fell then the spread could move to 25487 - 25507. Assuming this was the case, you could decide to take your profits by closing your spread bet at 25507.
Profit/Loss = (initial value of the market - final value of the market) x stake per point
Profit/Loss = (25563 - 25507) x £2 per point stake
Profit/Loss = 56 points x £2 per point
Profit/Loss = £112 profit
On the other hand, if the market had increased to, for example, 25592 - 25612, you could choose to close your trade to limit your losses. If this were the case, you would buy your spread bet at 25612.
You would do this with the same £2 per point stake:
Profit/Loss = (initial value of the market - final value of the market) x stake per point
Profit/Loss = (25563 - 25612) x £2 per point stake
Profit/Loss = -49 points x £2 per point
Profit/Loss = -£98 loss
