Kraft Foods Spread Trading Example
If you are going to spread bet on US shares such as Kraft Foods then, looking at a spread betting website like Financial Spreads, at the moment you would find a spread betting price of $28.95 - $29.00.
This means you could bet on Kraft Foods shares to go higher than $29.00 or to go lower than $28.95.
With spread betting, investors bet on every unit the market moves up or down; in the case of the Kraft Foods market a unit is $0.01 of the share's price movement.
For this instance, you might decide to spread bet £2 for every cent that the Kraft Foods share price goes up or down.
Spread Betting on the Market to Rise
If you were to go long of Kraft Foods at $29.00 and the shares rose then the spread might change to $29.46 - $29.51. If this were the case, you might decide to close your spread trade at $29.46.
Your Profits (or Losses) = (settlement value of the market - opening value of the market) x stake per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = ($29.46 - $29.00) x £2 per cent stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = $0.46 x £2 per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = £92 profit
Markets can also fall, if the market decreased to $28.57 - $28.62, you could choose to close your spread bet to prevent further losses. In that case, you would sell at $28.57.
So, with the same £2 per cent stake:
Your Profits (or Losses) = (settlement value of the market - opening value of the market) x stake per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = ($28.57 - $29.00) x £2 per cent stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = -$0.43 x £2 per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = -£86 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Kraft Market to Go Down?
One of the benefits of placing a spread bet is that you can sell the markets.
If you recall, initially the market was $28.95 - $29.00.
If you were to go short of Kraft Foods at $28.95 and the shares fell then the spread could move to $28.48 - $28.53. If that were to happen, you could decide to take your profits by closing your spread bet at $28.53.
Your Profits (or Losses) = (opening value of the market - settlement value of the market) x stake per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = ($28.95 - $28.53) x £2 per cent stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = $0.42 x £2 per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = £84 profit
However, if the market had risen to, for example, $29.29 - $29.34, you may decide to close your bet to restrict your losses. Assuming this was the case, you would buy at $29.34.
Therefore, with the same £2 per cent stake:
Your Profits (or Losses) = (opening value of the market - settlement value of the market) x stake per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = ($28.95 - $29.34) x £2 per cent stake
Your Profits (or Losses) = -$0.39 x £2 per cent
Your Profits (or Losses) = -£78 loss
