4) How do you Spread Bet on the MTN Market to Go Up?
MTN Spread Betting Example
If you decide to spread trade on South African shares such as MTN then, on visiting a spread betting company's website, you may find a spread trading price of 10,816c - 10,863c.
This means you can bet on MTN shares to increase above 10,863c or decrease below 10,816c.
When making a spread bet, investors bet on every unit the market rises or falls. With the MTN market a unit is 1 South African cent of the share's price movement.
For this instance, you could choose to bet £1 for every cent that the MTN share price rises or falls.
Buying - Spread Betting on the Market to Rise
If you were to go long of MTN at 10,863c and the shares increased then the spread could become 10,982c - 11,029c. Therefore, you might decide to close your trade for a profit at 10,982c.
P&L = (final price of the market - opening value of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (10,982c - 10,863c) x £1 per cent stake
P&L = 119c x £1 per cent
P&L = £119 profit
Markets can also fall, if the market were to drop to, for example, 10,754c - 10,801c, you might want to close your trade to prevent further losses. If this were the case, you would sell at 10,754c.
You would do this with the same £1 per cent stake:
P&L = (final price of the market - opening value of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (10,754c - 10,863c) x £1 per cent stake
P&L = -109c x £1 per cent
P&L = -£109 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the MTN Market to Go Down?
One useful benefit of placing a spread trade is that you can short the markets.
When we began this example, the spread was 10,816c - 10,863c.
If you were to go short of MTN at 10,816c and the shares decreased then the market might be re-priced at 10,656c - 10,703c. If that were to happen, you might want to close your spread bet for a profit by buying at 10,703c.
P&L = (opening value of the market - final price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (10,816c - 10,703c) x £1 per cent stake
P&L = 113c x £1 per cent
P&L = £113 profit
On the other hand, if the market had increased to, as an example, 10,872c - 10,919c, you may want to close your bet to limit your losses. If that happened, you would buy at 10,919c.
You would close your bet with the same £1 per cent stake:
P&L = (opening value of the market - final price of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (10,816c - 10,919c) x £1 per cent stake
P&L = -103c x £1 per cent
P&L = -£103 loss
