4) How do you Spread Bet on the Pfizer Market to Go Up?
Pfizer Trading Example
If you decide to spread trade on US shares like Pfizer then, on visiting a spread betting site like Financial Spreads, at the time of writing you would see a spread betting price of $19.90 - $19.93.
Therefore, you could spread bet on Pfizer shares to go higher than $19.93 or to go lower than $19.90.
When you spread bet, you trade on every unit the market goes up or down. Specifically, for the Pfizer market a unit is $0.01 of the share's price movement.
For example, you could decide to bet £2 for every cent that the Pfizer share price goes up or down.
Buying - Spread Betting on the Market to Increase
If you were to buy Pfizer at $19.93 and the shares rose then the spread could move to $20.33 - $20.36. If so, you could decide to take your profits by closing your spread trade at $20.33.
Profit or Loss = (closing value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit or Loss = ($20.33 - $19.93) x £2 per cent stake
Profit or Loss = $0.40 x £2 per cent
Profit or Loss = £80 profit
However, if the market decreased to $19.50 - $19.53, you may decide to close your bet to prevent further losses. If that happened, you would sell at $19.50.
With the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit or Loss = (closing value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit or Loss = ($19.50 - $19.93) x £2 per cent stake
Profit or Loss = -$0.43 x £2 per cent
Profit or Loss = -£86 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Pfizer Market to Go Down?
A major benefit of spread trading is that investors can short the markets.
When we started this example, the spread was $19.90 - $19.93.
If you were to go short of Pfizer at $19.90 and the shares went down then the spread might become $19.51 - $19.54. If this were the case, you might want to close your bet for a profit by buying at $19.54.
Profit or Loss = (initial value of the market - closing value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit or Loss = ($19.90 - $19.54) x £2 per cent stake
Profit or Loss = $0.36 x £2 per cent
Profit or Loss = £72 profit
Of course, if the market increased to, for example, $20.26 - $20.29, you may decide to close your trade to limit your losses. In that case, you would buy your spread bet at $20.29.
You would do this with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit or Loss = (initial value of the market - closing value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit or Loss = ($19.90 - $20.29) x £2 per cent stake
Profit or Loss = -$0.39 x £2 per cent
Profit or Loss = -£78 loss
