4) How do you Spread Bet on the Philips Market to Go Up?
Philips Trading Example
If you are going to spread trade on Dutch shares like Philips then, looking at a spread trading website like IG Index, you may see a spread trading price of €23.20 - €23.27.
That means you can spread trade on Philips shares to go higher than €23.27 or to go lower than €23.20.
If you are spread betting, you trade on every unit the market goes up or down. For the Philips market a unit is €0.01 of the share's price movement.
For instance, you might decide to spread bet £2 for every cent that the Philips share price moves up or down.
Buying - Spread Betting on the Market to Go Up
If you were to go long of Philips at €23.27 and the shares went up then the spread could change to €23.97 - €24.04. Therefore, you could decide to take your profits by closing your trade at €23.97.
Profit/Loss = (final value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€23.97 - €23.27) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = €0.70 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = £140 profit
Markets can also fall, if the market were to drop down to €22.51 - €22.58, you might decide to close your trade to prevent further losses. If this were the case, you would sell your spread bet at €22.51.
You would close your bet with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (final value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€22.51 - €23.27) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -€0.76 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£152 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Philips Market to Go Down?
One of the many advantages of placing a spread bet is that you can go short of the markets.
When we started this example, the spread was €23.20 - €23.27.
If you were to go short of Philips at €23.20 and the shares went down then the spread could become €22.50 - €22.57. If that happened, you might choose to close your spread bet for a profit at €22.57.
Profit/Loss = (initial value of the market - final value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€23.20 - €22.57) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = €0.63 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = £126 profit
On the other hand, if the market had moved up to, as an example, €23.81 - €23.88, you may want to close your trade to limit your losses. If so, you would buy at €23.88.
Therefore, with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (initial value of the market - final value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = (€23.20 - €23.88) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -€0.68 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£136 loss
