3) Where can I find Live Charts / Candlestick Charts for the Platinum Market?

Spread betting companies often offer a variety of free data to their clients (accounts are subject to status, terms and conditions).

The most popular commodities data, apart from live prices, tends to be the candlestick charts. The time period of the charts can usually be varied. You can often alter the candlestick charts to show market movements in the order of 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10minutes, 1 hour, 1 day or 1 week periods.

With a number of the charts you can also update the settings to help your technical analysis. For example you can add Bollinger Bands and 20, 50 and 100 point Moving Averages and commodities candlestick charts are currently available with:

4) How do you Spread Bet on the Platinum Market to Go Up?

Platinum Financial Spread Betting Example

If you decide to spread bet on a commodity like Platinum then, looking at a spread trading website, you would currently see a spread betting price of $1,415.0 - $1,425.0.

This means you can spread trade on Platinum to move above $1,425.0 or below $1,415.0.

When spread betting, you bet on every unit the market moves up or down. With the Platinum market a unit is $0.1 of the commodity's price movement.

For example, you might choose to spread bet £3 for every $0.1 Platinum increases or decreases.

Spread Betting on the Market to Increase

If you bought Platinum at $1,425.0 and the commodity increased then the spread might change to $1,429.3 - $1,439.3. Assuming this was the case, you might decide to close your trade for a profit by selling at $1,429.3.

Profit or Loss = (closing level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per $0.1
Profit or Loss = ($1,429.3 - $1,425.0) x £3 per $0.1 stake
Profit or Loss = $4.3 x £3 per $0.1
Profit or Loss = £129 profit

Of course, if the market decreased to, as an example, $1,421.1 - $1,431.1, you might decide to close your bet to prevent further losses. If that were to happen, you would sell your spread bet at $1,421.1.

So, with the same £3 per $0.1 stake:

Profit or Loss = (closing level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per $0.1
Profit or Loss = ($1,421.1 - $1,425.0) x £3 per $0.1 stake
Profit or Loss = -$3.9 x £3 per $0.1
Profit or Loss = -£117 loss

5) How do you Spread Bet on the Platinum Market to Go Down?

A major advantage of placing a spread trade is that you can short the markets.

When we began this example, the spread betting price was $1,415.0 - $1,425.0.

If you were to go short of Platinum at $1,415.0 and the commodity decreased then the spread might become $1,400.5 - $1,410.5. If that happened, you could close your bet for a profit by buying at $1,410.5.

Profit or Loss = (opening level of the market - closing level of the market) x stake per $0.1
Profit or Loss = ($1,415.0 - $1,410.5) x £3 per $0.1 stake
Profit or Loss = $4.5 x £3 per $0.1
Profit or Loss = £135 profit

Markets can also rise, if the market had risen to, for example, $1,409.1 - $1,419.1, you might decide to close your spread bet to restrict your losses. Therefore, you would buy your spread bet at $1,419.1.

You would close your bet with the same £3 per $0.1 stake:

Profit or Loss = (opening level of the market - closing level of the market) x stake per $0.1
Profit or Loss = ($1,415.0 - $1,419.1) x £3 per $0.1 stake
Profit or Loss = -$4.1 x £3 per $0.1
Profit or Loss = -£123 loss
