Spread betting companies often offer a variety of free data to their clients (accounts are subject to status, terms and conditions).
The most popular indices data, apart from live prices, tends to be the candlestick charts. The time period of the charts can usually be varied. You can often alter the candlestick charts to show market movements in the order of 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10minutes, 1 hour, 1 day or 1 week periods.

4) How do you Spread Bet on the Russell 2000 Market to Go Up?
Russell 2000 Spread Betting Example
If you are going to spread bet on an index such as the Russell 2000 then, looking at a spread betting company's website, at the moment you would find a spread trading price of 643.1 - 643.4.
As a result, you can spread bet on the Russell 2000 to go above 643.4 or below 643.1.
If you are spread trading, you trade on every unit the market goes up or down; specifically, for the Russell 2000 market a unit is 0.1 points of the index's price movement.
As an example, you could choose to bet £3 for every 0.1 points the Russell 2000 increases or decreases.
Betting on the R2K to Go Up
If you were to buy the Russell 2000 at 643.4 and the index increased then the spread could move to 647.6 - 647.9. If so, you could close your spread bet for a profit by selling at 647.6.
P&L = (settlement value of the market - opening value of the market) x stake per 0.1 points
P&L = (647.6 - 643.4) x £3 per 0.1 points stake
P&L = 4.2 points x £3 per 0.1 points
P&L = £126 profit
Nevertheless, if the R2K had moved down to, for example, 639.5 - 639.8, you may want to close your spread bet to limit your losses. If this were the case, you would sell your spread bet at 639.5.
So, with the same £3 per 0.1 points stake:
P&L = (settlement value of the market - opening value of the market) x stake per 0.1 points
P&L = (639.5 - 643.4) x £3 per 0.1 points stake
P&L = -3.9 points x £3 per 0.1 points
P&L = -£117 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the Russell 2000 Market to Go Down?
One of the many benefits of placing a spread trade is that you can go short of the markets.
When we began this example, the price was 643.1 - 643.4.
If you were to go short of the Russell 2000 at 643.1 and the index fell then the spread might become 639.0 - 639.3. Therefore, you might want to close your spread bet for a profit by buying at 639.3.
P&L = (opening value of the market - settlement value of the market) x stake per 0.1 points
P&L = (643.1 - 639.3) x £3 per 0.1 points stake
P&L = 3.8 points x £3 per 0.1 points
P&L = £114 profit
Nevertheless, if the R2K increased to, as an example, 646.3 - 646.6, you could choose to close your trade to limit your losses. If that were to happen, you would buy at 646.6.
With the same £3 per 0.1 points stake:
P&L = (opening value of the market - settlement value of the market) x stake per 0.1 points
P&L = (643.1 - 646.6) x £3 per 0.1 points stake
P&L = -3.5 points x £3 per 0.1 points
P&L = -£105 loss
