4) How do you Spread Bet on the SAP Market to Go Up?
SAP Spread Trading Example
Should you decide to spread trade on German shares like SAP then, on visiting a spread betting website like Capital Spreads, you may find a spread of €32.79 - €32.90.
That means you can spread trade on SAP shares to increase above €32.90 or decrease below €32.79.
When spread betting, investors bet on every unit the market moves up or down. With the SAP market a unit is €0.01 of the share's price movement.
So, you might choose to trade £2 for every cent that the SAP share price increases or decreases.
Buying - Spread Betting on the Market to Increase
If you were to buy SAP at €32.90 and the shares rose then the spread could become €33.48 - €33.59. If this were the case, you might choose to close your trade for a profit by selling at €33.48.
P&L = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€33.48 - €32.90) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = €0.58 x £2 per cent
P&L = £116 profit
The markets can of course fall, if the market decreased to, for example, €32.36 - €32.47, you might decide to close your bet to restrict your losses. Therefore, you would sell at €32.36.
You would close your bet with the same £2 per cent stake:
P&L = (final level of the market - opening level of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€32.36 - €32.90) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.54 x £2 per cent
P&L = -£108 loss
5) How do you Spread Bet on the SAP Market to Go Down?
One of the benefits of placing a spread bet is that you can sell the markets.
When we began this example, the spread betting price was €32.79 - €32.90.
If you were to sell SAP at €32.79 and the shares went down then you might see the spread move to €32.16 - €32.27. If so, you might decide to take your profits by closing your spread trade at €32.27.
P&L = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€32.79 - €32.27) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = €0.52 x £2 per cent
P&L = £104 profit
Markets can also rise, if the market were to rise up to, as an example, €33.17 - €33.28, you might decide to close your bet to prevent further losses. In that case, you would buy at €33.28.
You would do this with the same £2 per cent stake:
P&L = (opening level of the market - final level of the market) x stake per cent
P&L = (€32.79 - €33.28) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.49 x £2 per cent
P&L = -£98 loss
