» US markets closed higher yesterday, amid optimism that Europe would be able to quell the region’s debt crisis, shrugging off a report that Standard & Poor’s has put 15 European nations on review for a possible downgrade.
» Tenet Healthcare, the top gainer on the S&P 500 index, rallied 12.4%, after a broker upgraded the stock to “Outperform”.
» MetLife added 3.7%, after it stated that next year’s earnings would match market expectations.
» JPMorgan Chase advanced 3.7%, and emerged as the top gainer on the DJIA index, while Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley jumped between 2.6% and 6.8%, amid easing worries over the European contagion risk.
» Media stock, Gannett jumped 10.2%, after a broker lifted its rating on the stock to “Buy” from “Neutral”, citing increased chances for a dividend boost.
» DJIA gained 0.7% to close at 12,097.8. NASDAQ surged 1.1% to settle at 2,655.8. S&P 500 soared 1.0% to end at 1,257.1.

» Asian markets are trading lower this morning, amid renewed concerns about the European debt crisis, after S&P placed 15 European countries on watch for a possible ratings downgrade, and after Australia’s central bank highlighted global growth risks.
» In Japan, Toyota Motors and Kyocera traded lower, as the yen appreciated against the dollar. Chemical maker, Tosoh lost value, after Mizuho Securities downgraded the stock to “Neutral” from “Buy”.
» In Hong Kong, China Resources Land and China Overseas Land & Investment paced declines, after Credit Suisse reiterated its “Underweight” rating on the Chinese property sector.
» HSBC Holdings lost value, after UK regulators penalised the company over the sale of some of its securities to retail investors.
» In South Korea, POSCO traded lower, after Fitch downgraded its outlook on the company to “Negative” from “Stable”.
» Nikkei 225 index is trading 1.2% lower, at 8,593.3. Hang Seng index is trading 1.5% lower at 18,889.8, while the Kospi index is trading 1.0% lower at 1,904.1.
