» Looking at FTSE 100 shares spread betting, the markets finished on a mixed note yesterday, with the FTSE 100 index ending lower, led by declines in retail sector stocks on disappointing Christmas trading update from Tesco. In addition, data showed that US retail sales and initial jobless claims missed market expectations.
» Tesco plummeted 16.0%, after it posted a gloomy trading update for the festive shopping season. Peers, Sainsbury and Wm. Morrison Supermarkets fell 5.4% and 6.0%, respectively.
» Reckitt Benckiser dropped 1.4%, as JP Morgan Cazenove downgraded its rating on the stock to “Neutral” from “Overweight”.
» Scottish & Southern Energy and Centrica logged losses of 1.0% and 1.2%, respectively, after they announced a cut in household power tariffs.
» Ocado surged 33.5%, after reporting a strong trading performance for the fourth quarter.
» FTSE 100 edged down 0.1% to end at 5,662.4, while FTSE 250 gained 0.9% to settle at 10,466.5.

» In US shares spread betting the markets closed higher yesterday, as a drop in borrowing costs at the Spanish and Italian debt auctions, overshadowed weak retail sales and initial jobless claims data.
» FedEx, Caterpillar and Alcoa gained between 1.6% and 3.1%, as sentiments improved among investors.
» Eastman Chemical and Dow Chemical rose 3.1% and 3.6%, respectively, as the European Union removed anti-dumping tariffs.
» Business-software maker, CA gained 4.2%, after hedge fund Taconic Capital Advisors accumulated a 5.1% stake in the firm.
» Starbucks gained 1.0%, after UBS reiterated its “Buy” rating and raised its price target on the stock.
» Urban Outfitters added 2.6%, after a broker raised its recommendation on the stock to “Neutral” from “Underperform”.
» DJIA edged up 0.2% to close at 12,471.0. NASDAQ ticked up 0.5% to end at 2,724.7. S&P 500 inched 0.2% higher to settle at 1,295.5.

Asian Shares News - 13 Jan 12
» Asian markets are trading mostly higher this morning, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street. This came as comments by ECB President Mario Draghi that the European debt markets has seen some stabilization coupled with successful European bond auctions added to optimism that Europe would avoid a possible credit crunch.
» In Japan, Inpex gained value after the company and its French partner, Total, approved a $34.0 billion investment in a liquefied natural gas project in Australia.
» Pacific Metals, traded higher, after Goldman Sachs Group named the stock as one of the top performing Japanese stocks of this year.
» In Hong Kong, Gemdale declined after the China Daily reported that Beijing would restrict home purchases.
» In the China spread betting markets, Bank Of China, Hang Seng Bank and ICBC traded higher, tracking gains in their European peers.
» In South Korea, Samsung Electronics paced higher following report that it would forge an alliance with Japan's Olympus Corporation.
» Nikkei 225 index is trading 1.0% higher, at 8,467.1. Hang Seng index is trading flat at 19,094.30, while the Kospi index is trading 0.5% higher at 1,873.30.
