However, losses were restricted as banking stocks rallied, amid expectations that Slovakia would ratify expanding the European Financial Stability Facility.
» Miners, Anglo American and Antofagasta, skidded 1.1% and 1.6%, respectively, tracking a decline in base metal prices.
» Intercontinental Hotels slid 0.6%, as Barclays cut its rating on the stock to “Underweight” from “Overweight”.
» Banking stocks, RBS, Barclays and Lloyds Banking group, rose between 1.6% and 2.8%, after Societe Generale included the stocks in its top sector picks.
» Compass gained 1.4%, after the company stated that it remains optimistic about prospects in the US.
» FTSE 100 shed 0.1% to 5,395.7, while FTSE 250 edged up 0.1% to settle at 10,155.1.

» US markets closed mixed yesterday, as optimism over corporate earnings offset worries about worsening of the European debt crisis. Spread betting investors remained cautious ahead of Slovakia’s vote on the eurozone’s bailout fund.
» Sprint Nextel, the top gainer on the S&P 500 index, surged 7.2%, after a broker considered it as its “top picks”.
» Alcoa gained 2.1%, on upbeat expectations ahead of its third-quarter earnings.
» Research In Motion rose 5.1%, as calls by institutional investors for its sale or a corporate shake-up continued to mount.
» BigBand Networks, the top gainer on the NASDAQ, surged 74.8%, as Arris Group agreed to acquire the company.
» Clean energy companies, First Solar and Sunpower, fell 6.5% and 2.5%, respectively, after Raymond James Financial cut its estimates on solar stocks.
» Franklin Resources slipped 2.9%, after reporting a decline in its AUM for September.
» DJIA edged down 0.1% to close at 11,416.3. NASDAQ gained 0.7% to settle at 2,583.0. S&P 500 rose 0.1% to 1,195.5.

» Asian markets are trading mostly higher this morning, as most banking stocks in Hong Kong recovered from earlier session declines, offsetting losses in other sectors after Slovakian lawmakers failed to approve an expansion of Europe’s financial bailout fund.
» In Japan, Sumitomo Metal Mining and Mitsui Mining & Smelting paced declines, after their US peer, Alcoa, reported lower-than-expected third-quarter earnings.
» Japanese exporters, Toyota Motor, Nikon and Honda Motor lost values, amid concerns about future demand.
» In Hong Kong, energy stocks, Petrochina and Cnooc, traded higher, as crude oil prices increased yesterday.
» Banks, Agricultural Bank of China and Bank of China, gained values, after China’s banking regulator urged the country to increase deposit rates to ease tight liquidity conditions.
» In South Korea, oil stocks, S-Oil and SK Innovation paced gains.
» Nikkei 225 index is trading 0.3% lower, at 8,749.2. Hang Seng index is trading 0.4% higher at 18,217.0, while the Kospi index is trading 0.3% higher, at 1,799.6.
