This market is all about spread betting on teams to do well or badly during Euro 2008. They don’t have to win or be the runner up for you to win your bet.
In this market points are awarded to the teams who end the event in the top positions.
For Euro 2008, Sporting Index award 100 points to the Winner, 75pts for the Runner-up, 50pts for Losing in the Semi-Final, 25pts to any team that loses in the Quarter Final and 0pts for not getting out of the Groups.
Therefore looking at today’s prices Portugal are 36 to 38pts*
This reflects the bookies opinion that they think Portugal are likely to lose in the Quarters or the Semis.
If you believed Portugal would do better than losing in the quarters, you might buy at 38 points for £5 per point.
If Portugal ended up being the Runner-up then Sporting Index would award them 75 points and you would have won 37 times your stake.
When Buying your profit / loss = (result – opening price) x your stake per point
= (75 points - 38 points) x your stake
= 37 points x £5 per point
= £185
Even if they lost in the semis and came forth you still would have made a profit. A squad losing in the Semis is awarded 50pts and if you bought at 38pts you would win 12 times your stake.
(50 - 38) x your stake
= 12 points x £5 per point
= £60
Of course Portugal could get knocked out in the quarters in which case you would lose.
= (25 points - 38 points) x your stake
= -13 points x £5 per point
= -£65
