» US markets closed sharply higher yesterday, as data showed that US manufacturing activity rose to a six-month high in December. Additionally, upbeat economic data on manufacturing and unemployment from around the world buoyed investors’ sentiment.
» Alcoa, FedEx and Caterpillar gained between 2.0% and 6.7%, amid easing worries over a global slowdown.
» Chesapeake Energy climbed 5.9%, after it announced a joint venture with French oil group Total.
» Coal miners, Patriot Coal, Alpha Natural Resources and James River Coal surged between 7.8% and 10.8%, after a federal court postponed a federal air-pollution rule last week.
» Lockheed rose 1.4%, after it bagged a $1.96 billion contract from the Pentagon. Cisco jumped 3.0%, as JPMorgan upgraded its rating on the stock to “Overweight” from “Neutral”.
» DJIA advanced 1.5% to close at 12,397.4. NASDAQ gained 1.7% to settle at 2,648.7. S&P 500 rose 1.5% to settle at 1,277.1.

» Asian markets are trading mostly higher this morning, taking cues from strong overnight gains on Wall Street, after upbeat economic data from the US and Germany boosted investors’ confidence in the global economy.
» In Japan, chipmaker, Elpida Memory gained value following a report that the company is in talks with Toshiba to integrate operations.
» Nomura Holdings traded higher, after SMBC Nikko Securities stated that the company might post profits for the last quarter.
» In Hong Kong, Swire Pacific traded lower, after it decided to spin-off its property unit.
» In South Korea, Hyundai Motor paced higher, after the company boosted output at its Czech car plant to more than 251,000 vehicles in 2011, up from 200,000 vehicles in 2010.
» Nikkei 225 index is trading 1.3% higher, at 8,563.1. Hang Seng index is trading 0.3% lower at 18,822.7, while the Kospi index is trading 0.1% higher at 1,876.7.
