4) How do you Spread Bet on the US Oil Market to Go Up?

US Oil Spread Betting Example

If you are going to spread bet on a commodity such as US Oil then, on visiting a spread trading website like Capital Spreads, at the moment you would see a spread of $79.94 - $80.00.

That means you could spread bet on US Oil (WTI) to go higher than $80.00 or to go lower than $79.94.

With spread betting, you trade on every unit the market moves up or down; in the case of the US Oil market a unit is $0.01 of the commodity's price movement.

For this example, you might decide to spread bet £2 for every $0.01 US Oil rises or falls.

Spread Betting on the Market to Increase

If you bought US Oil at $80.00 and the commodity went up then the market might be re-priced at $80.44 - $80.50. If so, you might decide to close your trade at $80.44.

Your Profit/Loss = (settlement price of the market - initial price of the market) x stake per $0.01
Your Profit/Loss = ($80.44 - $80.00) x £2 per $0.01 stake
Your Profit/Loss = $0.44 x £2 per $0.01
Your Profit/Loss = £88 profit

Of course, if the market had decreased to, as an example, $79.60 - $79.66, you might want to close your trade to limit your losses. Therefore, you would sell the market at $79.60.

With the same £2 per $0.01 stake:

Your Profit/Loss = (settlement price of the market - initial price of the market) x stake per $0.01
Your Profit/Loss = ($79.60 - $80.00) x £2 per $0.01 stake
Your Profit/Loss = -$0.40 x £2 per $0.01
Your Profit/Loss = -£80 loss

5) How do you Spread Bet on the US Oil Market to Go Down?

One of the advantages of spread betting is that investors can short the markets.

At the start of the example, the spread betting price was $79.94 - $80.00.

If you were to sell US Oil at $79.94 and the commodity fell then the spread might become $79.46 - $79.52. If this were the case, you might choose to close your trade for a profit by buying at $79.52.

Your Profit/Loss = (initial price of the market - settlement price of the market) x stake per $0.01
Your Profit/Loss = ($79.94 - $79.52) x £2 per $0.01 stake
Your Profit/Loss = $0.42 x £2 per $0.01
Your Profit/Loss = £84 profit

Nevertheless, if the market had moved up to, for example, $80.31 - $80.37, you may decide to close your spread bet to limit your losses. If that were to happen, you would buy at $80.37.

You would do this with the same £2 per $0.01 stake:

Your Profit/Loss = (initial price of the market - settlement price of the market) x stake per $0.01
Your Profit/Loss = ($79.94 - $80.37) x £2 per $0.01 stake
Your Profit/Loss = -$0.43 x £2 per $0.01
Your Profit/Loss = -£86 loss
