Should you decide to spread bet on US shares such as Chevron then, on visiting a spread betting site like InterTrader, you may find a spread betting price of $97.33 - $97.44.
Therefore, you can spread bet on Chevron shares to move above $97.44 or below $97.33.
When spread trading, you bet on every unit the market moves up or down; for the Chevron market a unit is $0.01 of the share's price movement.
For this instance, you could choose to spread bet £2 for every cent that the Chevron share price rises or falls.
Buying - Spread Betting on the US Equities to Increase
If you bought Chevron at $97.44 and the shares went up then you might see the spread move to $98.12 - $98.23. If this were the case, you could close your spread bet for a profit by selling at $98.12.
Profit/Loss = (closing value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($98.12 - $97.44) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = $0.68 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = £136 profit
The markets can of course fall, if the market dropped to, as an example, $96.71 - $96.82, you may decide to close your spread bet to limit your losses. If so, you would sell your trade at $96.71.
Therefore, with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (closing value of the market - initial value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($96.71 - $97.44) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -$0.73 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£146 loss
Buying - Spread Betting on the US Equities to Decrease
At the start of the example, the spread was $97.33 - $97.44.
If you were to sell Chevron at $97.33 and the shares fell then the spread could move to $96.61 - $96.72. If that were to happen, you might decide to close your spread bet for a profit at $96.72.
Profit/Loss = (initial value of the market - closing value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($97.33 - $96.72) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = $0.61 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = £122 profit
Of course, if the market increased to, for example, $97.88 - $97.99, you could choose to close your trade to restrict your losses. Assuming this was the case, you would buy your spread bet at $97.99.
So, with the same £2 per cent stake:
Profit/Loss = (initial value of the market - closing value of the market) x stake per cent
Profit/Loss = ($97.33 - $97.99) x £2 per cent stake
Profit/Loss = -$0.66 x £2 per cent
Profit/Loss = -£132 loss
